Catching up on the Genesis sermons…

Life has been just a little busy. Due to a number of constraints, I’ve fallen behind on my sermon posts. So, I am going to try to knock three out in a row.

First, a couple of weeks back, I preached on Genesis 21. In that sermon, we saw God interjecting Himself into Abraham’s life, tying up a number of lose ends that had resulted from Abraham’s missteps and miscalculations. God also came in a powerful was and kept the promise He had made with Abraham and Sarah – Isaac, the son of promise, was born. In this sermon, we noted that while sin has consequences, Jesus can work even through that to bring glory to His name.

Then we went to Genesis 22. Our Father’s Day text was the well known story of Abraham’s near sacrifice of his son Isaac. This is one of the best known and most loved stories in all the Old Testament. We discussed the difference between tests and temptations and also discussed how God uses tests to strengthen our faith as well as those around us. The Gospel is clearly presented in this text. We learn the basis of our faith is not our work, but the finished work of the Savior.

And then today we discussed the reality of death. We don’t like to focus on this, but most of us will face this vicious enemy many times. Abraham, in Genesis 23, loses his princess to death. And he grieves for her, but not as one who does not have hope. What we see is Abraham acting in faith that even the grave does cannot defeat the promises of God. And, like Abraham, we too can live in such a way that we can faithfully face death.

I pray these sermons are a blessing to you. If you are ever in the area, feel free to come by and worship with us at Providence Church.
