I Felt the Earth Move

At 4:37 am today, our family was surprised by our first earthquake. We live about 160 miles from the epicenter, but it was still noticeably strong. Stacy and I both woke up. It was the first time we had felt the effect of a earthquake. We did not know what it was. I then heard Abigail on the stairs. She said something was making noise under her bed. I assured her all was well and tucked her in. Melissa also came out to let me know her room had shaken as well. I then deduced it was an earthquake – our first!

I can tell you it was unnerving. We turned back to bed but had some difficulty getting to sleep.

Then I remembered this story…

1 Kings 19:11-12: Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.

The Lord is in the still small voice. We rest in His love and care, come wind, come earthquake, come fire. We all went to sleep in the arms of our King.

  3. Living in the NW, we’ve experienced 2 good-sized earthquakes in the past 10 years or so. The last one was a 6.4, and it was truly the roiling, shaking, quaking that one hears about! (Bookcases fell over, teacups fell off of shelves, you could literally SEE the ground moving underneath you!) Thankfully, as it was my son’s birthday, we were all gathered on my bed together reading his new birthday books. When it hit, we had the first sensation of “WHAT is THAT?” and when I realized what it was, we ran to our “safe” spot and rode out the remainder of it.

It is indeed unnerving! But something in me would rather have an earthquake than a tornado. Do you get those in your area? Those seem truly frightening!

    Karen,
    from the Seattle-area
