Oh, how I agree, but oh, how I disagree. Some of the teachings of NT Wright are what classical, historical, evangelical, Christianity would classify as heretical false teaching. If that makes me unpopular, then I am unpopular. Mr. Wright has a new idea about "Paul". He says Jesus was substituted for Israel, but does not believe in penal substitution. Woe unto those that follow this logic. He endorses the "Lost message of Jesus" by Chalke and Mann, where they say the traditional view of the atonement is a barrier to faith because it seems like cosmic child abuse! Wright endorses the book, and said Jesus took the force of evil (not God's wrath) and he even called penal substitution a caricature of the true one (Substitution). He said in an interview that he didn't believe this "I've been a naughty boy" and Jesus took our place, so whew. He said that was ok for a 5 year old but that we should grow up (in our understanding of substatution). Jeff Noblit once said, "Peace at all costs is the banner of the coward". Even Luther could not find himself at peace with Zwingli, and especially with Erasmus. The gospel is at stake, and it is much to high a price to pay to make amends with those who teach works righteousness (legalism) or law abandonment (antinomianism). Justification is critical for us to understand. I don't care about when you baptize or take communion, but you're not saved until you've been born again! Salvation is by grace, through faith, with the evidence of saving faith being works. Growing in holiness will absolutely happen to all who have been indwelt by the Holy Spirit. Some disagreements will seperate us theologically, spiritually (let him be as a heathen or a tax collector), and eternally. Just like John MacArthur says, THE TRUTH MATTERS. If it doesn't then nothing matters, and substitution, false teaching bishop Wright, matters.

i know it's only 12 hours old...but this is easily my favorite quote of the year so far:
"The internet has been about as useful in encouraging thoughtful theological discourse, or even appropriate ecclesiastical judgments, as it has been in encouraging sexual fidelity."
thanks for posting this james. RCJr provides a great example of guilt by proximity. i'm always glad to hear someone declare fidelity with friends even in the midst of disagreements.
happy new year, fletch
