Wednesdays are my official “liturgy” days. Typically, I spend a number of hours developing the liturgy that our church will use for the coming Lord’s Day. This weekend is also the first Sunday in Advent; the time when the church of Christ remembers the coming of the Lord.
One part of our liturgy is a responsive reading from the Word where we remember that we are to live our lives following the commands and precepts of the Lord. The Scripture I have selected for this week was particularly moving to me today, so I wanted to share it with you…
Exhortation to Obedience Romans 13:11-14
Elder: And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed.
People: The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.
Elder: Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy.
People: But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.
Friends, as you lead your families into the advent season this year, note that every day we live with the Lord is a day closer to our home-going. This should cause us to live in the Light of Christ, putting on His armor, and walking in a way that brings Him glory.
May we live in obedience to Him this season, recognizing the gift of God in our salvation.
It is meet and right so to do!
